Collection: Aran Yarn

THE TERM YARN refers to what you use to make your projects.  These are created by spinning PLY (number of ‘threads’) of FIBERS together such as WOOL, ACRYLIC or COTTON.  The number of ply twisted together determines what is referred to as the WEIGHT or THICKNESS of a yarn.  The thickness of a yarn should determine the number os STITCHES or ROWS created, but this is dependant on how LOOSE or TIGHT your TENSION is.  If you need to create a certain tension for your project, it can easily be altered by changing the size of your CROCHET HOOK or KNITTING NEEDLE as both these TOOLS use the same DIAMETER SIZE and can be used to determine the GAUGE (gayje: tightness or looseness) of your project.

YARN THICKNESS + TENSION = GAUGE: adjusted by NEEDLE/HOOK SIZE

CONVERTING BETWEEN DIFFERENT BRANDS OF YARN If you want to use a different yarn to the brand of pattern you use, refer to the ball band.  On there you will find all the information you need that you probably didnt realise was there and could be used to your advantage.  So, if you wanted to use a Hayfield pattern 10078 that uses 8 balls of Hayfield Bonus Aran but replace it with King Cole Fashion Aran wool:

Hayfield Bonus Aran 100g = 256m (280yds) × 8 balls of wool = 2048m (2240yds)

2048m (2240yds) ÷ King Cole Fashion Aran/200m (219yds)  = 10.24 (10.22) balls.

OTHER WEIGHT TERMS:

Roving: This is classified as even thought it is one unspun, thick ply, roughly an inch thick with a slight twist in it.
