Aida (named after the opera) is an open, even-weave fabric made of cotton that is traditionally used for cross stitch embroidery.
'Open weave' describes the gaps between the horizontal (Weft) and vertical (Warp) threads, allowing you to be guided to make your cross stitch squares.
The 'count' of the fabric is determined by how many warp or weft threads needed to create your cross stitch squares per inch. This enables for different thicknesses of yarn or embroidery floss when embroidering.
For example, a 10-count aida cloth would have 10 cross stitch squares per linear inch. Typical sizes are 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 count, ranked from the largest to the finest count. This means, the higher the number of the count, the smaller the threads, squares and holes.
Traditional colours are white and cream, though other colours are available.
