Shirring elastic is a round elastic that is coated in woven threads that when sewn a certain way into fabric it ruches or gathers to form a particular design. This embellishment can also be used to replace other fastenings such as buttons, belts and hook and loop tape.
On a garment, there is two or more rows of gathering that is used to decorate various areas, usually the the sleeves, main body (under the bust or the lower back), or yoke.
